It was a campfire kind of night at our house last night. It’s a little crazy with the buzz of excitement for a while and then we settle in. (Yeah right.) As long as that fire is going, the buzz is strong. You might have been imagining something quiet or calm if you only saw the photo. Nope. Imagine loud, and me on high alert until that fire was out. But it was worth it.

The work, the mess, the loud—it’s always worth it. Nonetheless, I’ve written about the pain, and nearly tragic path all of us parents are on who are going for a wholehearted grasp on this thing called parenthood. My article has been published over at The Glaze Brigade (if you’re interested in reading my take on being a wholehearted parent.) But I’ll give you and me a one line reminder for now: it’s about being empty, not all together; it’s about perseverance, not perfection.

A wholehearted parent is what you and I want to be when we grow up. It’s either that or when we become like the little children Jesus talked about, because it’s this desire born from God’s Spirit in our lives. It’s a bit difficult to define or understand outside of that. It looks different from family to family by design. This is due to its nature—it’s not a thing that can be acquired. It is a gift of God, that can only be received with open hands, also known as “empty”. To read more click here.

Persevering with you!

Hi, my name is Raynna and I’ve become a mama to six amazing kids over the last 14 years. What that means is—I’ve haven’t not had a baby or toddler to kiss and “pull my apron strings” for almost a decade and a half, and now I have a teenager at eye-level as well! All this time I’ve been trying to wrap my mind around it and figure out how to do well too. I’ve been on a quest to be a wholehearted parent, but I have often found myself distracted, spread too thin, broken hearted or just plain exhausted. I write and take photographs as a way to see truth and joy in the midst of daily life. It keeps me thinking straight. I hope it’s helpful to you too. By God’s goodness, I just published my first book. It’s my story of finding God in the dark, like dark night of the soul, not dark chocolate. Still with me? I know, I got distracted too.  Read an excerpt here.
