Life is music and the songs come to us in so many ways.

“…and I saw the mountains waking with the innocence of children, and my soul is still there with them wrapped in the songs they brought.” ~Richard Wayne Mullins

For years I’ve been working towards restoring the old custom of reading aloud to our children. Parents throughout history have blessed their children with this pastime, and although some never lost it, many of us did. Here’s one such old story-song that may have been sung to the tune of “Hush Little Baby”…

“Come, little leaves,”
Said the wind one day,
“Come over the meadows
With me, and play;
Put on your dresses
Of red and gold;
Summer is gone,
And the days grow cold.”

Soon as the leaves
Heard the wind’s loud call,
Down they came fluttering,
One and all;
Over the meadows
They danced and flew,
Singing the soft
Little songs they knew.

Dancing and flying
The little leaves went;
Winter had called them
And they were content-
Soon fast asleep
In their earthy beds,
The snow laid a soft mantle
Over their heads.

Isn’t that lovely? It made me happy the first autumn I read it nearly four years ago and it comes to me again every year now. We’re currently enjoying the last of the yellow sugar maple leaves here in Kentucky…”soon fast asleep in their earthy beds”.

Sweet dreams from Kentucky,
